West to Hengdaohezi

About an hour west by rail, the town grew with the Chinese Eastern Railway between 1897 and 1903; the fan-shaped engine shed of 1903 still turns on its table, a timber Orthodox church stands below the tracks, and the film-set village of the Linhai Xueyuan stories waits nearby.

East to Suifenhe

A rail ride of about 2.5 hours to a land port on tracks laid from 1897 to 1903; the gate park faces the frontier and the old railway quarter keeps its era houses.

Day 4

Into the Dahailin woods — overnight

About 180 kilometres and 3 hours northwest to the snow village; in season the drifts on the eaves pass 2 metres, and the evening belongs to the fire-heated guesthouse kangs.

Valley morning & departure
