Liuku — arrival & the river front

Liuku, the prefecture seat, sits at about 800 metres beside the Nu River; walk the riverside promenade at dusk, and in Lunar New Year season look in respectfully on the Lisu spring gathering at Denggeng, 12 km upstream.

Day 2

Laomudeng church & Zhiluo

Three hours north on the G219 Beautiful Highway brings you to the Lisu village of Laomudeng, whose church is known for four-part hymn singing, and next door Zhiluo — the prefecture capital until 1974 — now a quiet hilltop town facing the Gaoligong range.

Day 3

Bingzhongluo & the First Bend

Four to five hours further north, Bingzhongluo lies at about 1,500 metres under 2,000-metre canyon walls; see the First Bend where the river loops around a hamlet, the Tibetan lamasery and the Catholic church standing a few streets apart, then return south or push on toward the Tibet border.
