Arrival & gentle first day
Touch down at about 2,950 metres and stay low — the Niyang riverside paths and an early night are the altitude strategy that carries the rest of the trip.

Basum Lake — island monastery
West about 120 km to the 3,480-metre lake, 5A-listed since 2017; the plank bridge to the islet monastery, then a slow lakeshore loop among spruce and rhododendron. Overnight at the lake or back in Bayi.

Peach village & down to Pai town
In late March the Gala village orchards erupt pink; any season, the farmland road south to Pai town traces the Yarlung Tsangpo into the canyon country — overnight at the entrance town.

Grand Canyon viewpoints & Suosong
The viewpoint road follows the gorge — roughly 504 kilometres long, over 6,000 metres deep — to terraced Suosong village beneath the 7,782-metre pyramid of Namcha Barwa; sunset here is the trip's centrepiece.

Canyon hamlets & sunrise
Dawn light on the peak from the barley terraces, then a slow loop through riverside hamlets where Lhoba and Moinba families farm the fans above the river; afternoon drive back to the highway.

Sejila pass & Lulang
Cross the 4,720-metre pass for the forest-sea lookout on a clear morning, descend to Lulang at about 3,400 metres for stone-pot chicken and foggy boardwalks; overnight in the village.

East to Bomi — peach valley
Over the rebuilt Tongmai bridge to Bomi at about 2,700 metres; in blossom weeks the wild peach trees of the Parlung valley run village to village, and orchard lunches appear under the branches.

Midui glacier & on toward Ranwu
The Midui glacier drops from a 6,800-metre summit to about 2,400 metres, an easy boardwalk into ice country; continue east over the pass into Ranwu town for the night.

An honestly labelled neighbour day — Ranwu lies in Chamdo's Baxoi county, a 3,850-metre lake of blue arms under the Laigu glacier's icefalls; morning shoreline walk, then the drive back west to Bomi or Lulang.

Nanyi valley & departure
A last green valley south of the river, home ground of the Lhoba — one of China's smallest ethnic groups — with a small culture museum and terraced hamlets visited respectfully, then out from Mainling airport.
