Day 1

Arrival on the Niyang

Land at about 2,950 metres and go gently; in late March the Gala peach village on the town's edge turns pink, and any season the Niyang riverside walk is the right first move at 3,000 metres.

Day 2

Basum Lake — island monastery

About 120 km west, the alpine lake sits at 3,480 metres and has held national 5A status since 2017; a plank bridge crosses to the small Tsozong monastery on its rocky islet — take the lakeside loop slowly, the air is thin up here.

Day 3

Down to the Grand Canyon

South to the canyon entrance at Pai town, then a road of viewpoints along the gorge that drops past 6,000 metres over its roughly 504-kilometre length; settle into Suosong village facing the 7,782-metre pyramid of Namcha Barwa for the evening glow.

Day 4

Sunrise peak, Sejila pass, Lulang

Catch dawn light on Namcha Barwa from the village terraces, then cross the Sejila pass at 4,720 metres for the forest-sea lookout and descend to Lulang at about 3,400 metres — the stone-pot chicken lunch is the local rite.

Day 5

Back through the valley — departure

An easy return along the Niyang with a stop at a riverside village or, in blossom weeks, another peach-grove look, then out from Mainling airport — keep drinking water on flight day, the cabin follows thin-air days.
