Day 1

Kaili to Xijiang

From Kaili it is about 35 km east to the village of roughly 1,300 Miao households (the HSR reaches Kaili South from Guiyang in about 40 minutes); arrive before dusk, climb the viewing platform after dark, and stay overnight inside the village for the lit-up hillside.

Day 2

Xijiang Morning to Zhenyuan

Morning mist on the stilt houses, wind-rain bridges and silver-work shops, then the road and rail east - about 2 hours - to Zhenyuan, whose name dates to 1258; walk the river wall at dusk.

Day 3

Zhenyuan Old Town and Departure

Qinglong Cave's 30-odd halls cling to the cliff above the river, begun in the Ming Hongwu era of the late 1300s; climb Shiping Hill for the S-bend panorama, then catch the train out of Zhenyuan station.
