Xijiang Overnight

About 35 km east, the village of roughly 1,300 Miao households; arrive before dusk, climb the viewing platform after dark, and sleep inside the village for the lit hillside.

Day 3

To Zhenyuan

A slow village morning, then road and rail east about two hours to Zhenyuan, whose name dates to 1258; the river wall and the old-town lanes fill the evening.

Zhenyuan Full Day

Qinglong Cave's 30-odd halls began in the Ming Hongwu era of the late 1300s; Shiping Hill frames the S-bend, and a short boat ride reads the town from the water.

Down the HSR to Zhaoxing

Back through Kaili and Guiyang, then the Guiyang-Guangzhou HSR (opened December 2014) to Congjiang station and a short shuttle to Zhaoxing - five drum towers for the village's five clan hamlets, and evening song sessions in the covered stages.

Tang'an Terraces

An old stone path climbs about 5 km from Zhaoxing to Tang'an, an eco-museum hamlet on a shelf of rice terraces; walk up, lunch on sour-soup rice, and amble back for a last drum-tower evening.

Basha and Departure

About 7 km from Congjiang county town, Basha's men carry old muskets under a heritage custom and boys' coming-of-age haircuts are traditionally done with a sickle; an unhurried visit, then the HSR from Congjiang toward Guiyang or Guangzhou.
