The North Grottoes

About 25 km southwest of Xifeng, carving began in 509 under the Northern Wei; 295 niches hold some 2,100 figures, with the seven seated Buddhas of Cave 165 as the core. Allow a slow half-day among the cliff faces above the river confluence.

Qingcheng — the Zhou Ancestral Hill

Fifty kilometres north, tradition places Buzhu — the Zhou forebear who settled this valley — here about 4,000 years ago; the hillside park climbs in terraced courts. Down in town, the rebuilt Yaowangdong streets do riverside noodles and local liquor tastings.
