Shanhaiguan — the First Pass

The walled town founded in 1381 by Xu Da carries the First Pass tower, its big plaque attributed to the calligrapher Xiao Xian; climb Jiaoshan, the 519-metre first mountain of the Wall, for the ridge line running east to the sea.

Old Dragon's Head & Meng Jiangnu

The stone city that Qi Jiguang had driven into the sea in the 1570s was wrecked in 1900 and rebuilt late last century — walk the sea-wall end at low tide. The Meng Jiangnu temple east of town keeps the legend listed as national intangible heritage since 2006.

Port Garden & Departure

The port opened to trade in 1898; its old coal docks now form the West Port Garden, cranes kept as sculpture. A last market lunch, then the HSR back to Beijing in about two hours.
