Shantou opened as a treaty port in 1860, and the qilou arcades of the 1920s still radiate from the little pavilion circle; the Qing-era Laomagong temple doorway sells zongqiu — sticky-rice dumplings split into sweet and savory halves.

The 11 km bridge (opened 2015) reaches Guangdong's only island county, the main island about 110 square kilometers; the Ming-era commander's headquarters (founded 1576) and its courtyard keep the strait's administration on record.

Begun in 1910, the overseas-Chinese mansion at Chenghai counts 506 rooms mixing Chaoshan courtyards with Western arcades; nearby Zhanglin launched red-head emigrant boats through the 18th century, and its anchor stone still sits by the old canal.

Lotus Peak marks the rock where the Song loyalist Wen Tianxiang watched for the imperial fleet in 1278. In Chaoyang, Yingge troupes rehearse face-paint and short-stick drills — the dance entered the national intangible list in 2006 and found new audiences online in 2023.

An honest neighbor day, about an hour northwest — the Guangji bridge, begun in 1171, still closes nightly with its floating midsection of 18 boats; the archway street carries 23 restored Ming-Qing stone gates. Back to Shantou for the night.

Cross the 1999 bridge to Queshi's hill paths for the harbor panorama, then loop the 1928 Zhongshan Park's nine-bend bridge around the lotus pond at lantern hour.

The island's far loop — Qing'ao Bay's crescent, the Tropic-of-Cancer marker tower raised in 2015, and the Song-dynasty wells that stay fresh through the tide. Local buses link the sights; start early for the lighthouse road.

The riverside half of Chaozhou — the Hanwen Temple raised for Han Yu, exiled here in 819, and the Tang-era Kaiyuan Temple (founded 738) beside it; both keep quiet visiting hours, and the hill stairs behind reward with river views. Back by the last bus.

An honest neighbor day east — the Confucian academy, first built in 1140 and rebuilt many times since, stands beside the 1620s city gate tower; the old streets frame both. Back to Shantou by evening.

An honest Chaozhou-direction day — terraced Dancong oolong gardens above Fenghuang town with tea trees several centuries old; tasting rooms walk you through the charcoal refiring. About 90 minutes each way; start after an early breakfast.
