Arrival & Tashilhunpo
The Lhasa train covers about 253 km in 2.5-3 hours, or land at Peace Airport, 43 km from town at about 3,782 m. Day one stays slow at 3,836 m — the monastery founded in 1447 (halls usually 9:00-17:00) is plenty, with a riverside stroll to close it.

Kora Path & Dzong Hill
A second gentle day helps acclimatization. Walk the clockwise kora path under the monastery wall (allow about an hour), then climb about 20 minutes to the dzong ruins laid out around 1360 and take the late light over the city. Keep the evening unhurried at this elevation.

Gyantse Day
About 90 km south at roughly 4,040 m. The rock-top fort is the castle damaged in the 1904 fighting and later repaired; the nine-storey Kumbum at Palcho was begun in 1418 and finished in 1436, with 108 doors and 76 chapels. Old-town streets and back to Shigatse by evening.

Sakya Day
About 150 km and three hours west, at about 4,280 m. The monastery was founded in 1073 and the great hall of the south monastery went up in 1268; inside stands a scripture wall about 10 metres high holding tens of thousands of volumes. Drive the mountain road unhurried and rest after return.

Narthang, founded in 1153 and known for its woodblock printing, sits 15 km west; Shalu, founded in 1087 with 14th-century Han-style roofs, 15 km southeast. Both fit before an afternoon train from Shigatse station or a flight out of Peace Airport.
