Arrival, Chanyuan Temple & the Lower Forest

About 90 km west of Hangzhou — metro line 16 (opened 2020) to Lin'an, then a bus or taxi for the last 25 km. Settle in, then walk the temple grounds; the monastery dates to 1665 and was rebuilt after wartime bombing in 1941.

Day 2

The Big-Tree Kingdom

Stone steps from the temple forecourt at about 330 m climb roughly 4 km and 700 m to Kaishan Old Hall near 1,100 m under centuries-old Chinese firs. The reserve was set up in 1956 and joined the UNESCO Man-and-Biosphere network in 1996; strong walkers can continue toward the 1,506-metre west summit (the east peak tops out at 1,478 m).

Day 3

Taihu Source & Zhinan Village, Departure

Boardwalks follow the stream that feeds the Tiao river on its way to Lake Tai. Zhinan village sits near 600 m, and its ginkgo and maple colour usually runs from late October into November. Evening transfer to Lin'an or Hangzhou for the way home.
