Day 1

Arrival, Han River & Steamed Tables

Arrive at Xiantao West on the Hankou-Yichang railway (opened 2012), walk the levee above the 1,577-km Han River, and try mianyang sanzheng, the three steamed dishes the city is known for. Gymnastics champions Li Xiaoshuang (gold in 1992 and 1996) and Yang Wei (all-around gold in 2008) were born here.

Day 2

Mengli Shuixiang Water Town

The 4A water-town park rebuilds canal-side Hubei with the Hetang village, arched bridges and boat lanes; check the board for Mianyang shadow-puppet and flower-drum performances. Go on a weekday for quieter lanes.

Miancheng Old Town & Departure

About 35 km southwest, the former Mianyang seat (a name on maps since 503 AD) keeps a Ming-era mosque serving one of Hubei's old Hui communities; head back for an evening train from Xiantao West.
