Arrive at Xiantao West on the Hankou-Yichang railway (opened 2012), walk the levee above the 1,577-km Han River, and start with mianyang sanzheng, the three steamed dishes of this city of roughly 1.1 million people - the hometown of Olympic gymnasts Li Xiaoshuang (gold in 1992 and 1996) and Yang Wei (all-around gold in 2008).

The 4A water-town park rebuilds canal-side Hubei with the Hetang village and boat lanes; look for Mianyang shadow-puppet shows, a national intangible heritage.

Mianyang Town Heritage Park

A recreated old-Mianyang town - opera stage, workshops and food stalls; the Mianyang name itself goes back to the Liang dynasty (503 AD). Evening back on the riverfront.
