Day 1

Arrival, Beizi Temple & Aobao Hill

Fly in from Beijing, about an hour in the air. The lama temple was begun in 1742, and the 13-aobao hill behind it is Xilinhot's sunset viewpoint; keep the museum for tomorrow.

Day 2

Museum, river bends & flat-top volcanoes

Museum in the morning, the Xilin River bends 15 km south after lunch, and the Pingdingshan mesas another 20 km on for sunset — the rented-car loop totals about 80 km.

Day 3

East to West Ujimqin

The 145-km drive east takes about two hours. Spend the afternoon on Mongol Khan City's wrestling, racing and archery program, then sleep in a yurt camp on the grassland.

Day 4

Banlashan & neighbor day — Dali Nor

Morning on Banlashan's cliff, then about three hours east across the banner line into Chifeng's Hexigten Banner. Dali Nor is a steppe lake near 1,200 m above sea level, known for its winter net fishing — sleep at Reshuitang's hot-spring hotels.

Asihatu stone forest & back west

The granite "stone forest" lies about 90 minutes north of the lake, with four marked walking circuits; start early and budget the roughly four-hour drive back to West Ujimqin by evening.

On to the Ulagai bends

A three-hour run northeast brings you to the Ulagai management district; the boardwalks above the river bends face west, which makes them an evening rather than a morning stop.

Wolf valley, spring & film town

Wolves before 10 am, then Bulin Spring and the bingtuan-era streets built for Wolf Totem (2015); continue about two hours west to East Ujimqin's county town for the night.

Wuliyasitai & the road south

Climb the granite domes north of town in the cool of the morning, then drive the roughly 250 km back to Xilinhot — three and a half hours, with time for a last riverside walk.

South to Xanadu

The 180-km drive south takes about two and a half hours; the walls of Kublai's capital, founded in 1256 and UNESCO-listed in 2012, pair with the site museum on the Jinlianchuan grassland — sleep in Shangdu town instead of racing back.

Duolun lake & temple, then departure

Morning at the lake about 16 km east of town, then Huizong Temple, raised after Kangxi's 1691 assembly of the Khalkha leagues; after lunch it is about three hours back north to Xilinhot for evening flights.
