Xilinhot sits just under 1,000 m above sea level. The lama temple was begun in 1742; climb the hill behind it to the circle of 13 aobao for sunset, and let the league museum set up the days ahead.

The Xilin River loops some 15 km south of town; rent a car for the roughly 80-km loop, then watch sunset light rake the flat basalt mesas of Pingdingshan about 20 km further along the southern road.

Xanadu — Yuan Shangdu

A full-day loop — Kublai's summer capital, founded in 1256 and UNESCO-listed since 2012, lies about 180 km south on the Jinlianchuan grassland; leave the site by mid-afternoon for the drive back.
