Wutai Mountain — Temple Valley Day

An honest long day — the temple valley of Taihuai sits about 150 km east, 2.5 hours by road, at 1,700 m where the North Terrace climbs to 3,061 m. The white stupa of about 56 m, Eastern Han-era Xiantong Temple and the 108 steps to Pusading fill it; the valley was UNESCO-listed in 2009 and nights are cold even in July.

Yan Xishan Residence & Departure

20 km southeast at Hebian town in Dingxiang county, the sprawling Republican-era compound begun in 1913 — courtyards, carved doorways and period rooms, now a museum. Afternoon HSR from Xinzhou West.
