Arrival & the Wei kingdom in town

Start at the chancellor's residence, opened in 2009 on the reputed site of Cao Cao's administration after he moved Emperor Xian here in 196. Chunqiu Tower is the temple where Guan Yu is said to have read at night; the rebuilt Caowei city quarter lights up after dark.

Day 2

Shenhou — a day of Jun porcelain

South-west to Shenhou, about 40 km from the city, the town that fired Jun ware — kilns here have run for over 1,000 years, "one colour in, ten thousand colours out". Throw a pot in a workshop, walk the seven-li (3.5-km) old street, then finish at the free Jun official-kiln museum in Yuzhou on the way back.

Baling Bridge & the city museum

The Baling Bridge park, 4 km west of the centre, marks the spot where Guan Yu declined Cao Cao's gifts and rode off; a Ming-era stele records it. End at the free city museum (closed Mondays) beside the 52-metre Wenfeng pagoda of 1615, then the evening train.
