Day 1

Arrival & the Wei kingdom in town

The chancellor's residence opened in 2009 on the site tied to Cao Cao's rule after 196, when he moved Emperor Xian here. Chunqiu Tower is Guan Yu's night-reading temple; the rebuilt Caowei quarter glows after dark.

Day 2

Baling Bridge, museum & Wenfeng pagoda

The Baling Bridge park, 4 km west, keeps the Ming stele at Guan Yu's leave-taking spot. The free city museum (closed Mondays) and the 52-metre pagoda of 1615 sit together east of the old moat.

Day 3

Shenhou — Jun porcelain day

About 40 km south-west, Shenhou's kilns have fired Jun ware for over 1,000 years — "one colour in, ten thousand colours out". Book a throwing session, walk the seven-li old street, and check the kiln shrines; stay in town for the quiet evening.

Day 4

Dahongzhai — the prefecture's roof

West of Yuzhou, about 40 km, Dahongzhai tops out at 1,156 metres — the highest ground in Xuchang. Cableway plus boardwalk takes half a day; in late autumn the slopes turn red. Return to the city by evening.

Day 5

Yanling flowers & hot springs

East to Yanling county, about 40 minutes — the county plants some 600,000 mu of nursery flowers, on show every September at the expo. Soak at the Huadu springs afterwards and catch the evening high-speed train from Xuchang East.
