The Baling Bridge park, 4 km west, holds the Ming stele of Guan Yu's leave-taking. Pair the free city museum (closed Mondays) with the 52-metre pagoda of 1615 by the old moat.

Shenhou — Jun porcelain day

About 40 km south-west, Shenhou has fired Jun ware for over 1,000 years. Book a throwing session in the morning, walk the old street after lunch, and return via the free Jun kiln museum in Yuzhou.

Dahongzhai — the prefecture's roof

About 40 km west of Yuzhou, the summit stands at 1,156 metres — Xuchang's highest. Cableway up, boardwalks along the ridges, half a day plus picnic time; late autumn turns the slopes red.

Yanling flowers & hot springs

East about 40 minutes to Yanling, a county of some 600,000 mu of nursery flowers with the expo each September. Soak at Huadu afterwards and sleep over — the springs are the point of a slow evening.

Zhengzhou — an honestly labelled neighbouring city

High-speed rail covers the 80 km to Zhengzhou in about half an hour — honestly labelled, today is in the neighbouring city. The Henan Museum (free, closed Mondays) holds Shang bronzes and Jiahu bone flutes some 8,000 years old; the Erqi Memorial Tower anchors the shopping core.

Pang Donglai, Luming Lake & departure

Spend the morning at the locally famous Pang Donglai stores — arrive early, weekends queue. A slow loop of Luming Lake park fills the afternoon before your train from Xuchang East or Xuchang station.
