Day 1

The two-Han headline — Shizishan

At Shizishan, 4,000-plus terracotta figures turned up in 1984 and the Chu king's rock-cut tomb yielded 2,000-plus relics. See the gold-threaded jade suit — 4,000-plus plaques — at the free museum (closed Mondays) the same afternoon.

Day 2

Yunlong Lake & Yunlong Hill

About 7 square kilometres of lake, free to walk. The 142-metre hill holds the pavilion from Su Shi's 1078 essay; the free pictorial-stone museum by the south shore closes the afternoon.

Day 3

Guishan tomb & the old town's pavilion park

The Guishan corridors, 56 metres long, deviate just 1/16000 from the centreline; fifteen chambers cover 700-plus square metres. Take it slow after the metro ride out — Kuaizai park, named in Su Shi's day, sits in the old town.

Day 4

Hubu Hill, Xima Terrace & Huilongwo

Ming-Qing courtyards climb above the old city; Xima Terrace remembers Xiang Yu, capital-maker of Pengcheng in 206 BC. Huilongwo's lanes and a bowl of sha soup close the day.

Day 5

Huaihai Campaign memorial grounds

The memorial park on Fenghuang hill is free, generally 9:00-17:00 and closed Mondays — check the official notice first; the campaign ran 66 days from November 1948 to January 1949, and the grounds keep a factual register of it. Metro line 1 gets you close; an afternoon museum pass pairs with it.

Day 6

Pan'an Lake wetland in Jiawang

About 30 km north-east, Pan'an Lake was carved by decades of coal mining and reborn as a wetland park — boardwalks, reed beds and herons. Half a day suffices; add a late lunch back in Jiawang town.

Day 7

Mailingshan & the canal night at Guanwan

East about 2 hours to Xinyi — Mailingshan, a 4A hill park some 10 km south of the county town, walks ridges and temples in half a day. Sleep in Guanwan's canal-side old town, standing here for 1,300-plus years, and catch the evening light on the water.

Day 8

Guanwan morning & return west

The old town is quiet before the tour buses — sweet-soy workshops open early. Taste the mung-bean liquor, walk the wharf lanes, and ride back to Xuzhou with a stop at any market stall still selling baked cakes.

Day 9

Qufu — an honestly labelled Shandong day

Honestly labelled — Qufu, the hometown of Confucius, lies in Shandong, about 40 minutes up the Beijing-Shanghai high-speed line from Xuzhou East to Qufu East. The temple, mansion and cemetery inscribed by UNESCO in 1994 fill a day; book the last train back or stay on.

Day 10

Market morning & departure

A last market breakfast — sha soup and eight-strip fried dough — then the metro or taxi to Xuzhou East or Xuzhou station. High-speed trains reach Nanjing in 1.5 hours, Jinan in about the same, and Beijing in roughly three.
