Day 6

South to Nangqian

A roughly 3-hour drive southwest — honest note, Nangqian County is still Yushu Prefecture, but the Lancang (Mekong) headwater valleys are a full day's country of their own; overnight at about 3,600 m.

Nangqian valley, back to Gyegu

A slow morning among forested slopes and hillside monasteries, then the road home over the passes reaches Gyegu by evening.

Memory & market day

The earthquake memorial east of town documents the 2010 disaster and the rebuilding; the covered markets are good for a yak-meat lunch and butter tea.

Grassland day & festival season

A full herder day on the meadows — in July the horse-racing festival fills them; otherwise tents, yaks and the wide 4,000 m light.

Day 10

Road east to Maduo

Honest labeling ahead — the G214 east leaves Yushu for Maduo County in Golog Prefecture, roughly 330 km and 5-6 hours; the county town sits near 4,300 m, the biggest altitude jump of the trip, so arrive slow.

Gyaring & Ngoring lakes

The Yellow River's first great lakes lie near 4,300 m among the sources; boardwalks and viewpoints sit in biting wind even in summer — a full day out of Maduo and back.

Day 12

Maduo to Xining

The long leg — about 500 km and 7-8 hours down the G214 to Xining at about 2,275 m; honest note, public transport on this route is thin, so line up a shared car or driver a day ahead.

Day 13

Xining — Ta'er Monastery

The monastery about 25 km southwest of Xining, commonly dated to 1379, gives the plateau journey a quiet final page; the city's Muslim-quarter food streets close the evening.
