Day 1

Arrival — town & Jiegu Monastery

Fly into Batang Airport, about 3,900 m and among the highest in China; spend the day low-key — the Sakya-school monastery on the ridge has watched Gyegu for over 600 years, and the prefecture museum explains the plateau and the 2010 quake, magnitude 7.1, that levelled the town before it was rebuilt.

The Gyanak Mani mound has collected carved prayer stones since 1715 — counts run past 200 million slabs; continue onto the Batang grassland toward the airport, where herder camps sit at about 4,000 m.

Princess Wencheng Temple & departure

The temple gorge about 20 km south holds a cliff carving of Princess Wencheng roughly 1,300 years old; pair it with the prayer-stone stream of Leba Gorge, then the evening flight to Xining takes about 2 hours.
