Gushanzhong in Changtai

Under an hour northeast to the thousand-year mountain village: old camphor trees, the Shuiyunjian creekside lanes and spring rapeseed fields. Back to the city.

Tianluokeng & Yuchanglou

Two hours up to Nanjing County — the lookout over the one-square-four-round group, then the Yuchanglou of around 1308 with pillars leaning up to 15 degrees. The 2008 UNESCO listing counts 46 tulou in three counties. Sleep in Shuyang.

Taxia & Hekeng

Morning in Taxia's stone lanes and S-shaped stream bend, afternoon in the valley that holds the 13-tulou Hekeng group. A village night in between.

Daimei's 276 Ming-Qing houses on a 560-year water layout, then the Zhangpu coast — a first-batch national geopark from 2001 — where Nading Island is ringed by some 1.4 million basalt columns. Sleep in Zhangpu.

A beach day on the Liu'ao peninsula — Emerald Bay's dunes and the old Ming-era Liu'ao fortress on the headland — before the run south. Sleep in Zhangpu or Liu'ao.

Onto Dongshan Island for the 200-tonne wind-moving stone by the old Tongshan wall, the Guandi temple founded in 1387, and the film-location lanes of Nanmen Bay. Sleep on the island.

Dongshan — bays & ring road

Morning swim at Maluan Bay's long beach, then the sea-bridge loop of the Sufeng Mountain ring road for coastal views. A slow island evening.
