Tianluokeng & Yuchanglou

About two hours up to Nanjing County. The lookout frames Tianluokeng's five towers — one square, four round — then comes the Yuan-era Yuchanglou, built around 1308, its pillars leaning up to 15 degrees. These towers joined UNESCO in 2008 with 46 tulou across three counties.

Yunshuiyao — Hegui & Huaiyuan

The film-renamed town by the creek, where 13 ancient banyans line the flagstone path. Heguilou (1732) stands five storeys on 200-odd pine posts driven into a swamp; Huaiyuanlou (1905-1909) is the area's best-kept double-ring round tulou.

A 2.5-hour ride southwest to Dongshan Island, Fujian's second largest. See the 200-tonne wind-moving stone by the old Tongshan wall, lunch on Nanmen Bay's seafront, then depart from Yunxiao HSR station half an hour away.
