Day 1

Old Town Arrival

Zhangzhou was founded in 686. Walk the Hong Kong Road and Taiwan Road lanes, drop by the Confucian temple founded in 1044, and finish with a bowl of lu mian and a cup of si guo tang.

Day 2

Tianluokeng, Yuchanglou & Taxia

Up to Nanjing County (about two hours) for the lookout over Tianluokeng's one-square-four-round group, the 1308 Yuchanglou with pillars leaning 15 degrees, then Taxia village's stone lanes. UNESCO listing came in 2008, 46 tulou across three counties. Sleep in Shuyang town.

Day 3

Yunshuiyao & back to the city

Morning on the creek path under 13 ancient banyans; Heguilou (1732) sits on 200-odd pine posts in a swamp and Huaiyuanlou (1905-1909) is the finest double-ring round tulou. Drive back to Zhangzhou for the night market.

Day 4

Dongshan Island

2.5 hours southwest to Fujian's second-largest island. The 200-tonne wind-moving stone stands by the old Tongshan wall; film fans know Nanmen Bay from The Left Ear, and Maluan Bay's long shallow beach closes the day. Sleep on the island.

Day 5

Volcanic coast & departure

The coastal geopark at Zhangpu — a first-batch national geopark from 2001 — lays out black lava shores at Xiangshan, with Linjinyu and Nading islands offshore, the latter fenced by some 1.4 million basalt columns. Return via Zhangzhou or the Xiamen airports.
