Day 1

Arrival at altitude

Zhaotong lies at about 1,900 metres — take the first day easy. Old-town lanes, Qingguan Pavilion park, and apples grown here since 1940.

Day 2

Dashanbao & the cranes

About 80 kilometres west and above 3,000 metres: from November to March over 1,000 black-necked cranes winter on the Dahaizi and Tiaodunhe wetlands, and Jigongshan's rim drops into a canyon. Return to the city for the night.

Day 3

Huanglianhe waterfalls

The scenic area in Daguan county counts 47 waterfalls — walk the gorge loop between cascades and bamboo, sleep in Daguan or push on to Yanjin.

Day 4

Doushaguan pass

In Yanjin county the Qin-era Wuchi Road — over 2,200 years old — climbs past Bo-people coffins set in the cliff and the 794 inscription of Tang envoy Yuan Zi. Sleep in Yanjin town along the Guan river.

Day 5

Hot springs at Shuifu & departure

Down to Shuifu on the Jinsha river for the cliffside West Grand Canyon hot-spring resort, then a look at the 6.4-gigawatt Xiangjiaba dam upstream. Depart from Shuifu toward Yibin or return to Zhaotong.
