To Dengfeng — Shaolin
The 80-kilometre run west: the monastery founded in 495, more than 240 stupas of the Pagoda Forest, kung fu shows on the hour. The 2010 UNESCO listing covers this whole valley. Sleep in Dengfeng.

Sanhuangzhai & Songyang Academy
Cliff walkways of Sanhuangzhai in the morning; the academy of 484, its 4,500-year cypresses and the 744 Tang stele in the afternoon. Second Dengfeng night.

Zhongyue temple & observatory
The east flank of Mount Song — the temple quarter serving the central peak, and the Gaocheng observatory raised from 1276 for Yuan calendar surveys. Train back to Zhengzhou for the night.

Only Henan, full day
The 2021 drama compound east of town runs 21 theatres from late morning to night; book three or four shows, eat in the wheat-field courtyards between.

Yellow River day
A full riverside day north of the city: the 106-metre Emperors Yan and Huang carving of 2007, the cableway and the museum of the loess landscape. Evening back in the city.

Gongyi — manor & grottoes
An hour west to Gongyi: the Kang family manor, home to twelve generations over some 400 years, then the Northern Wei cave temple of around 500 with its 18 reliefs of imperial processions. Back to Zhengzhou.

Kaifeng rail day
An honest neighbouring-city day — about twenty minutes by rail east to the old Song capital. Pick the Iron Pagoda and Dragon Pavilion, or the Qingming riverside park, and the night market before the return train; the site's own Kaifeng guide goes deeper.
