Why Visit Capital Cities and Tombs of the Ancient Koguryo Kingdom?
These tombs are one of the least-visited UNESCO sites in China and among the most rewarding. The murals inside the Tomb of the Dancers are 1,500 years old and still legible — dancers, hunters, the four directional deities (Blue Dragon, White Tiger, Vermilion Bird, Black Tortoise). I was the only visitor at the General's Tomb on a weekday in May, standing alone in front of a 13 m stone pyramid older than most European cathedrals. Ji'an itself is a sleepy border town on the Yalu River with North Korea visible on the far bank.
