Why Visit Chengde Mountain Resort and its Outlying Temples?
Chengde is Beijing's most underrated day trip. The Putuo Zongcheng Temple — a miniature Potala Palace in Hebei — is extraordinary, and far less crowded than the real thing. The Mountain Resort itself is more of a pleasant park than a blockbuster attraction, but the temples alone justify the trip. I took the 8:00 AM train from Beijing, saw the temples + resort by 15:00, and was back for dinner.

Chengde (formerly Jehol) was the summer capital of the Qing emperors from 1703 to 1820. The Mountain Resort is the world's largest imperial garden at 5.6 km² — twice the size of the Summer Palace in Beijing — containing lakes, grasslands, and forests designed to replicate China's diverse landscapes. Surrounding it are the Eight Outer Temples, built in Tibetan, Mongolian, and Han Chinese architectural styles as diplomatic gestures to the Qing Empire's minority peoples. The Putuo Zongcheng Temple is a 2/3-scale replica of the Potala Palace in Lhasa.
