Why Visit Chengjiang Fossil Site?

The Chengjiang Fossil Site, on the northeastern shore of Fuxian Lake in Yunnan, preserves an early Cambrian (530 million years ago) marine ecosystem in exceptional detail. Unlike most fossil sites that preserve only hard shells and bones, Chengjiang preserved soft tissues — eyes, guts, nerves, gills — in fine-grained mudstone, capturing the moment of the Cambrian Explosion when animal body plans diversified dramatically. Over 200 species have been described, including the earliest known vertebrates (Myllokunmingia and Haikouichthys), the first known large predator (Anomalocaris), and countless bizarre forms with no modern equivalents.
