Why Visit Dazu Rock Carvings?
Dazu is the most underrated UNESCO site in China. I visited on a misty Tuesday and shared Baodingshan with perhaps 20 other people. The Thousand-Hand Guanyin — 1,007 arms in a 7.7 m × 12.5 m panel, each hand holding a different object, gold leaf glinting in the rain — is the single most impressive piece of religious sculpture I have seen in China. The Hell Scene tableau, with its demons boiling sinners and ox-headed judges weighing souls, is Medieval Christianity-level vivid. Chongqing locals treat it as a weekend outing; international tourists barely know it exists.

The Dazu Rock Carvings comprise 75 protected sites across Dazu District, 100 km west of Chongqing, with 50,000+ statues carved between the 9th and 13th centuries. Unlike the Mogao Caves (painted grottoes in the far northwest), Dazu is open-air cliff sculpture — figures emerge directly from the sandstone, arranged in narrative panels that read like a comic strip of Buddhist and Taoist teachings. The Baodingshan site, carved under the monk Zhao Zhifeng between 1174–1252, is the masterpiece: a horseshoe-shaped gully with 31 tableau groups telling stories of karma, filial piety, and enlightenment. The carvings merge Buddhist, Taoist, and Confucian iconography — unique in Chinese religious art.
