Why visit
There is nothing else quite like Huanglong on Earth. The travertine terraces are similar to Pamukkale in Turkey but at triple the altitude, with a Tibetan alpine backdrop of snow peaks and primeval forest. The light is best at midday when the sun illuminates the pools — the colors are almost neon. Altitude is the main challenge: 3,500+ m means reduced oxygen. I was gasping on the uphill sections despite being fit, and saw several people turn back with headaches.

Jiuzhaigou is turquoise lakes + multi-tier waterfalls in a forested valley. Huanglong is golden travertine terraced pools in an alpine setting. Both are UNESCO and both are extraordinary. Jiuzhaigou is more accessible (flat, boardwalks). Huanglong is more physically demanding (altitude, stairs).
Is Huanglong open in winter?
No — the park closes from December through March due to heavy snow. The boardwalks and pools are buried under ice. The cable car also shuts down.
