Why Visit Longmen Grottoes?
The Fengxian Temple Buddha is one of the great sculptures of the world — the face is serene, monumental, and somehow intimate at the same time, 17 meters tall but with the delicacy of a portrait. Standing on the staircase opposite it, the Yi River flowing below and the smaller caves pockmarking both cliffs into the distance, the scale of 200 years of devotion carved into limestone is overwhelming. The smaller caves repay close looking — late afternoon light rake-reveals details invisible at midday. Longmen is more compact and easier to appreciate in one visit than Mogao or Yungang.

The Longmen Grottoes, 12 km south of Luoyang, are a 1 km stretch of limestone cliffs carved into 2,345 caves and niches containing 100,000+ Buddhist statues, ranging from 2 cm to 17.14 m. Carving began in 493 AD when the Northern Wei Dynasty moved its capital to Luoyang and continued through the Tang Dynasty (618–907). The Fengxian Temple — a cavern 30 m wide and 35 m tall — houses the site's masterpiece: a 17.14 m seated Vairocana Buddha flanked by disciples, bodhisattvas, and guardian kings, commissioned by Empress Wu Zetian in 672 AD. The Buddha's face is said to be modeled on the empress herself.
