Why visit
The Fengxian Temple Buddha is one of the great sculptures of the world — the face is serene, monumental, and somehow intimate at the same time, 17 meters tall but with the delicacy of a portrait. Standing on the staircase opposite it, the Yi River flowing below and the smaller caves pockmarking both cliffs into the distance, the scale of 200 years of devotion carved into limestone is overwhelming. The smaller caves repay close looking — late afternoon light rake-reveals details invisible at midday. Longmen is more compact and easier to appreciate in one visit than Mogao or Yungang.

Tips
- Start on the west bank (main concentration of caves) — the morning light is better. Cross to the east bank for the panorama back across the river
- Late afternoon (15:00–17:00) is the best light — the setting sun illuminates the west bank caves from the east bank viewpoint
- The audio guide (¥30) is worth it — there is limited English signage at individual caves
- Combine with the Luoyang Museum (free, excellent Tang Dynasty collection) and White Horse Temple (China's first Buddhist temple, 68 AD)
- Luoyang is famous for water banquet (水席) — a 24-course soup meal. Find it in the old town after your visit

Longmen vs Mogao vs Yungang — which is best?
Longmen: Tang Dynasty sculpture at its peak, open-air, compact/easy visit, Fengxian Temple Buddha. Mogao: Silk Road painted cave art, 1,000-year span, more historically significant but harder to appreciate (dark caves, guided only). Yungang: Earliest (5th–6th century), massive cave interiors with colossal Buddhas, more varied styles. All three are essential for Buddhist art enthusiasts. For the casual visitor: Longmen is the easiest to appreciate in one visit.
Who was Empress Wu Zetian and what is her connection to Longmen?
The only female emperor in Chinese history (r. 690–705). She commissioned the Fengxian Temple at Longmen and the Vairocana Buddha's face is traditionally believed to be modeled on hers. The inscription at the temple credits her personal donation of 20,000 strings of cash (her annual cosmetics allowance) to fund the carving.
Why were so many Buddha heads missing?
Systematic looting in the late 19th and early 20th centuries by Western collectors, dealers, and museums. Additional damage during the Cultural Revolution (1966–1976). An estimated 10–15% of Longmen's statues lost their heads. Many are now in museums in the US, Europe, and Japan. Repatriation efforts continue for some pieces.
How do I get to Longmen from Luoyang?
Bus 53 or 81 from Luoyang train station or city center (40 min, ¥5). Taxi/DiDi: 30 min, ¥40. The site is 12 km south of the city. If arriving by HSR at Luoyang Longmen Station, it is a 10-minute taxi ride (¥15).
