Why visit
The Mogao Caves are the closest thing to a time machine on the Silk Road. Each cave is a different century, a different donor, a different artistic style. The 45,000 m² of murals tell every Buddhist story ever painted. The real constraint: you see only 8–12 caves per visit (assigned by guide), so each trip is a curated sample. I booked the maximum-ticket English tour and saw Cave 45 (the "perfect" Tang Dynasty sculpture group) and Cave 158 (the 15.8 m reclining Buddha) — both were worth the flight to Dunhuang alone.

- Photography is strictly forbidden inside caves (phones, cameras, everything)
- The Mogao Digital Exhibition Center (included in ticket) shows 2 films before the cave tour — don't skip them

How do I book Mogao Caves tickets?

How many caves can I see?
The standard tour covers 8 caves in about 2 hours. You cannot choose which caves — guides follow a rotating schedule to manage humidity levels inside. Special-cave add-ons (booked separately) give you 2–4 additional caves for ¥150–200 per cave.
Why can't I take photos inside the caves?
Flash photography damages pigments, but even non-flash photos are banned because cumulative light exposure degrades the 1,000-year-old mineral paints. The CO₂ from human breath also accelerates deterioration, which is why visitor numbers are capped and cave assignments rotate.
How do I get to Dunhuang?
Dunhuang Airport (DNH) has flights from Xi'an (2.5h), Lanzhou (1.5h), and Beijing (4h). HSR from Lanzhou to Dunhuang: ~8 hours. Many travelers arrive via the Silk Road overland route (Zhangye → Jiayuguan → Dunhuang).
What else is there to do in Dunhuang?
The Singing Sand Dunes (Mingsha Shan) and Crescent Moon Lake (¥120, 5 km from town) are the must-do — climb the dunes for sunset. The Dunhuang Museum (free) for Silk Road history. The Yadan National Geopark (150 km, yardang rock formations) for a day trip. The Shazhou Night Market for lamb skewers and dried fruit.
How much time do I need in Dunhuang?
2 full days minimum. Day 1: Mogao Caves (half day) + Singing Sand Dunes (afternoon/sunset). Day 2: Yadan Geopark day trip or Dunhuang Museum + explore the town. 3 days is more comfortable.
