Why Visit Mount Emei Scenic Area, including Leshan Giant Buddha Scenic Area?
Leshan Buddha deserves its fame — the scale is impossible to convey in photos. Standing at its feet, you realize the toenail is larger than your head. The park around it has excellent views from multiple angles, and the boat ride (¥70) gives the best full-statue photo. Its subtropical forest is home to 3,200+ plant species and the famous Emei monkeys (Tibetan macaques). The Leshan Giant Buddha, 40 km away, is a 71 m tall Maitreya Buddha carved into a red sandstone cliff at the confluence of three rivers between 713–803 AD. Its construction was led by the monk Haitong, who according to legend gouged out his own eyes to prove his devotion when funding was threatened.

Do not carry visible food. Do not make eye contact or bare your teeth (smiling = aggression to monkeys). Walking sticks (available from vendors) help deter them.
How hard is the Mount Emei hike?
The full trail from base to summit is 50+ km with massive elevation gain — 2–3 days of hard hiking. Most visitors take the bus to the Leidongping station (2,430 m) then cable car or a 1.5-hour walk to the summit. The summit area is flat and accessible.
Is Leshan Buddha crowded?
Yes — the narrow cliff stairs down to the Buddha's feet create a bottleneck. On weekends and holidays, the queue to descend can be 2–3 hours. The boat ride bypasses this entirely and gives a better photo. Go on a weekday and arrive at 8:00 AM for the stairs.
