Pingyao is a perfectly preserved Ming-Qing walled city, its 6.4 km of city walls, four main streets, and 3,000+ courtyard homes looking much as they did in the 14th–19th centuries. The city was the financial center of China from 1823 to 1950 — the Rishengchang Draft Bank, China's first bank, was established here and the city's banking houses controlled roughly half of China's silver trade. When the Qing Dynasty fell, Pingyao was bypassed by modernization and preserved through neglect; it was "rediscovered" in the 1980s and inscribed as a UNESCO site in 1997.
