Why Visit Sichuan Giant Panda Sanctuaries?
Most visitors only see pandas at the Chengdu Research Base (which is not part of the UNESCO site). The Wolong base inside the actual sanctuary has fewer visitors, a mountain setting, and the option to volunteer for a day (¥700–1,000, feeding and enclosure cleaning). Mt. Siguniang — 4 hours from Chengdu — has alpine valleys that rival the Swiss Alps for scenery, with about 5% of the visitor numbers of Jiuzhaigou. I volunteered at Wolong in 2018 and the moment a 100 kg male panda took a carrot from my hand at arm's length justified every yuan.

Can I hold a baby panda?
No. China banned tourist panda-holding in 2018 to reduce disease transmission risk. The volunteer program at Wolong allows you to feed adult pandas (through enclosure bars, with gloves) and clean enclosures, but not hold cubs. If you see "hold a panda" tours advertised, they are either outdated or illegal.
What is the difference between Wolong and the Chengdu Panda Base?
The Chengdu Research Base (¥58, 10 km from Chengdu) has more pandas and is designed for high-volume tourism — paved paths, shuttle carts, crowds. Wolong (¥90, 3h from Chengdu) has fewer pandas but a dramatic mountain setting, a volunteer program, and is inside the actual UNESCO sanctuary. Chengdu = easier. Wolong = better experience.
How likely am I to see a wild panda?
Extremely unlikely. Wild pandas are solitary, shy, and inhabit dense bamboo forest at 1,500–3,000 m. Even researchers who track them for years rarely see one. You will see panda signs (droppings, bamboo bite marks) on trails. The only guaranteed panda sightings are at the Wolong and Dujiangyan bases.
How do I get to Wolong from Chengdu?
Bus from Chengdu Chadianzi Bus Station to Wolong town: 3 hours, ¥50. The panda base is 10 minutes from Wolong town by local taxi (¥20). Private car from Chengdu: 3 hours, ¥600–800. The road is winding and mountain — if you get carsick, take medication beforehand.
Is Mt. Siguniang worth the trip?
Yes, if you want alpine trekking with far fewer visitors than Jiuzhaigou or Huanglong. Shuangqiao Valley has boardwalks and shuttle buses (accessible). Changping Valley is a serious trek with wild panda habitat and 6,000+ m peaks. Not a substitute for Jiuzhaigou — do both if time allows. Siguniang is drier and more alpine; Jiuzhaigou is more otherworldly with the turquoise lakes.
