Why visit

Tiger Leaping Gorge is the best 2-day hike I have done in China. The High Trail clings to the gorge wall at 2,600 m with Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (5,596 m) on one side and the Jinsha River roaring 2,000 m below on the other. The guesthouses along the trail (Halfway, Tea Horse, Sean's) are simple, friendly, and serve cold beer with that view. The Nujiang Valley further west is wilder — the road north to Bingzhongluo takes you past stone Tibetan villages, terraced fields, and the First Bend of the Nujiang. This is frontier Yunnan: the infrastructure is basic, the rewards are immense.

  • Tiger Leaping Gorge High Trail is moderate difficulty — 2 days, 22 km, max altitude 2,670 m. No technical climbing
  • The gorge guesthouses do not take online bookings in advance — just show up, there is always room (except Golden Week)
  • Altitude varies enormously — Shangri-La (3,200 m) and Feilaisi (3,400 m) require acclimatization
  • Road closures from landslides are common July–August. Build buffer days into your itinerary
  • The Nujiang Valley road is being upgraded (construction through 2027). Check conditions in Lijiang or Shangri-La before heading west

What are the Three Parallel Rivers?

The Jinsha (upper Yangtze), Lancang (upper Mekong), and Nujiang (upper Salween) rivers run roughly north-south in parallel through northwestern Yunnan, separated by mountain ridges 4,000–6,000 m high and only 18–80 km apart. Over 300 km, the rivers never meet despite their proximity. The Jinsha eventually turns east to become the Yangtze; the Lancang flows south to become the Mekong; the Nujiang becomes the Salween. This is one of the most geologically dramatic river systems on Earth.

Can I hike Tiger Leaping Gorge independently?

Yes — it is one of China's best independent hikes. The High Trail is well-marked (Chinese and English signs at intersections). Guesthouses at Naxi Family, Tea Horse, Halfway, and Tina's provide meals and beds (¥50–150). No guide needed. No permit needed. Start at Qiaotou (north entrance), finish at Tina's or Walnut Garden. 2 days, 1 night.

Is the area safe for independent travel?

Tiger Leaping Gorge: yes, well-established backpacker trail, safe, basic infrastructure. Nujiang Valley: more remote, fewer English speakers, some areas require a guide (particularly near the Myanmar border). Meili: safe but remote — bring cash (no ATMs in Feilaisi), and be prepared for altitude. Check road conditions before any trip.

What ethnic minorities live in the Three Parallel Rivers area?

30+ ethnic groups including Tibetan, Naxi, Lisu, Bai, Yi, Nu, Dulong, and Pumi. The Nujiang Valley is predominantly Lisu and Tibetan. Tiger Leaping Gorge area is Naxi. Meili area is Tibetan. Shangri-La (Zhongdian) is predominantly Tibetan. Each valley has a distinct cultural character.

Why has Kawagebo never been climbed?

Kawagebo (Kawa Karpo, 6,740 m) is one of the highest unclimbed peaks in the world. A 1991 Japanese-Chinese expedition ended in an avalanche that killed all 17 climbers. A 1996 attempt also ended in fatalities. The mountain is sacred to Tibetan Buddhists — locals believe the summit is protected by a deity. In 2001, the Chinese government banned all future climbing attempts, making Kawagebo permanently off-limits.
