Tiger Leaping Gorge is the best 2-day hike I have done in China. The High Trail clings to the gorge wall at 2,600 m with Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (5,596 m) on one side and the Jinsha River roaring 2,000 m below on the other. The guesthouses along the trail (Halfway, Tea Horse, Sean's) are simple, friendly, and serve cold beer with that view. The Nujiang Valley further west is wilder — the road north to Bingzhongluo takes you past stone Tibetan villages, terraced fields, and the First Bend of the Nujiang. This is frontier Yunnan: the infrastructure is basic, the rewards are immense.

Why has Kawagebo never been climbed?
Kawagebo (Kawa Karpo, 6,740 m) is one of the highest unclimbed peaks in the world. A 1991 Japanese-Chinese expedition ended in an avalanche that killed all 17 climbers. A 1996 attempt also ended in fatalities. The mountain is sacred to Tibetan Buddhists — locals believe the summit is protected by a deity. In 2001, the Chinese government banned all future climbing attempts, making Kawagebo permanently off-limits.
