Why visit
Heavenly Lake (Tianchi) at Bogda is the easy introduction — turquoise alpine water at 1,900 m with the 5,445 m Bogda Peak reflected on calm days. Kazakh herders rent horses along the shore. It is touristy by the main entrance but empties out quickly once you hike 15 minutes along the lake trail. The more ambitious components — Kalajun's rolling meadows and Bayinbuluke's "Nine Bends" river at sunset — are among the most beautiful alpine landscapes in China and receive a fraction of the visitors.
