Why visit
The Huashan panel from a boat on the Zuo River is genuinely striking — 1,900 red stick-figures frozen mid-ritual across a 170 m cliff face, reflected in the green water. The boat approach is the right way to see it: the figures were painted at water level (the river was higher then) and they make most sense from the river perspective. I took the 9:00 AM boat from Chongzuo and had the river and the rock art to myself for most of the ride. The surrounding karst scenery — Guangxi's signature steep limestone hills — provides a dramatic frame.
