  • Yes → Luoyang is a clear win. 1.5-hour HSR from Xi'an North (西安北) to Luoyang Longmen (洛阳龙门) station, then a 5-minute taxi to the grottoes. Round trip ¥230 second class.
  • No → Luoyang is a long way from anywhere else useful; pair it with Zhengzhou (郑州) or Kaifeng (开封) to make the trip worth it.

  • April 10 – May 5 (Peony Festival 牡丹文化节) → Luoyang blooms. Hotels fill and prices double, but the peonies at Wangcheng Park (王城公园) and the National Flower Garden (国家牡丹园) are memorable. Book 2+ weeks ahead.
  • October, November, March → Cool, dry, uncrowded. The grottoes are at their visual best with low-angle autumn light on the west cliff.
  • December – February → Cold (0–8°C) but workable. Sites are quiet. Bring layers.

  • Half a day → Train from Xi'an at 07:30, return at 19:00. 3–4 hours at the grottoes, the rest is transit.
  • 1 full day → Add the White Horse Temple (白马寺), China's first Buddhist temple (68 CE), 30 minutes by taxi from the grottoes.
  • 2 days → Add Guanlin (关林) (the only tomb of a general — Guan Yu — in China with a "king" title), the Luoyang Museum, and an evening walk in the old town.

Q4. Are you into art, history, or just ticking a UNESCO box?

  • Art/history → The Fengxian Temple (奉先寺) niche with the 17-meter-tall Vairocana Buddha (completed 675 CE, Tang dynasty) is one of the most important stone-carving ensembles in Asia. Bring binoculars for the detail.
  • Ticking a box → The site is bigger than expected: 2,345 caves and niches, 100,000+ statues along 1 km of cliff. A 2-hour "highlights" route from the main gate through Fengxian and back covers the essentials.
  • Photography → Best light is 1 hour after opening (08:00–09:00) and the last 2 hours before closing (16:00–18:00, varies by season). Tripods need a permit from the ticket office.

When Luoyang is not worth it

  • You're on a 5-day first trip and haven't allocated time to Xi'an — that has to come first.
  • You dislike caves or ancient statuary (the site is all caves, all statues, all stone).
  • You visit in late April and haven't booked hotels — peony festival prices triple.

  • Hours: 08:00–18:30 (summer), 08:00–17:30 (winter). Last entry 1 hour before close.
  • Tickets: Buy online at luoyangmudan.cn or on-site. Real-name required (passport).
  • Guides: English guides can be hired at the visitor center, ¥200–300 for 2 hours. The on-site audio guide is ¥20 in English.
  • Best photo spot: Across the river from the west cliff at sunset.
  • Avoid: The "free guide" touts near the entrance — they're sales pitches for jade shops.
