Visit Nanjing for History?

TL;DRYes, Nanjing (南京) is one of China's top 3 history cities, alongside Beijing and Xi'an. It was the capital of six dynasties over 1,700 years (Eastern Wu, Eastern Jin, Liu Song, Southern Qi, Liang, Chen, plus Ming, Republic of China). Three world-class sites: Nanjing Massacre Memorial Hall (侵华日军南京大屠杀遇难同胞纪念馆), Ming Xiaoling Tomb (明孝陵), and Confucius Temple & Qinhuai River (夫子庙秦淮河). Add the City Wall (明城墙), the longest city wall in the world still standing. 2–3 days is the right amount. Cost: ¥500–900/day mid-range.

5 decision questions

Q1. Are you a history-first or food-first traveler?

  • History first → Nanjing is essential. The Ming Xiaoling (1381) is the tomb of Hongwu Emperor, founder of the Ming Dynasty. The Confucius Temple area dates to 1034 AD. The Presidential Palace (总统府) spans Ming, Qing, Taiping, Republic, and PRC eras — five governments under one roof.
  • Food first → Nanjing's signature dish is salted duck (盐水鸭), China's "national duck." Also duck blood and vermicelli soup (鸭血粉丝汤), pan-fried buns (生煎包), and the small sweet dumplings tangyuan (汤圆). The food scene is excellent but overshadowed by Chengdu and Guangzhou.
  • Both → This is the right city. 3 days: 2 history + 1 food crawl.

Q2. Are you going with kids under 14?

  • Yes → Skip the Nanjing Massacre Memorial Hall for younger children. The museum is intense — graphic photos and mass burial site. Appropriate for 14+. Substitute the Nanjing Museum (南京博物院), one of China's top 3 museums, with a kid-friendly interactive section.
  • No → The Memorial Hall is a must-visit. Allow 2.5 hours, English audio guide available.
  • Teens → Take them. Contextualize it; this is a foundational site for understanding modern China.

Q3. Is this your first or tenth China trip?

  • First trip → Nanjing is better as a 2-day Shanghai side trip than a stand-alone destination. The HSR from Shanghai is 1.5 hours, 250+ daily trains.
  • 2nd or 3rd trip → Worth 3 days on its own. Add a day trip to Yangzhou (扬州) for the Slender West Lake and morning tea.
  • 10th trip → Pair Nanjing with Luoyang (洛阳) for the Longmen Grottoes — a 2-city history deep-dive.

Q4. Do you need a 1-day, 2-day, or 3-day plan?

  • 1 day → Confined to Confucius Temple + Qinhuai River (evening) + City Wall walk. Possible from Shanghai via early HSR.
  • 2 days → Add Ming Xiaoling Tomb (UNESCO, 1381), Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum (中山陵), and the Nanjing Massacre Memorial Hall.
  • 3 days → Add Nanjing Museum, Presidential Palace, Linggu Temple (灵谷寺), and an evening impressions-of-Qinhuai river cruise (¥80).

Q5. Is English your only language?

  • Yes → Nanjing has full English support: airport signs, metro, top museums. The Memorial Hall audio guide is excellent in English. The Presidential Palace has English plaques.
  • Mandarin → Add Qingliangshan Park (清凉山) and Chaotian Palace (朝天宫) for quieter, less-translated history.
  • Group tour → Nanjing is rarely on standard group itineraries; mostly independent travelers.

6 weighted criteria

  • Time fit (25) — 2 days is the minimum for Nanjing. 3 days is comfortable. Add as a Shanghai side trip or as part of a Yangtze loop (Nanjing + Wuhan + Yichang).
  • Cost fit (20) — Mid-range ¥500–900/day. Budget ¥250–450. The city's 4-star hotels are 30–40% cheaper than Shanghai's at the same rating.
  • Crowd fit (18) — Mid-tier Chinese city crowd. The Memorial Hall is busy on weekends (10,000+ visitors/day) but not unbearable. The Confucius Temple is packed Friday–Sunday evenings; weekdays are calm.
  • Visa fit (15) — 30-day visa-free applies. Nanjing is on the standard list.
  • Family fit (12) — Easy city, walkable, flat, English signage. Stroller-friendly.
  • Memorability (10) — The Nanjing Massacre Memorial Hall consistently ranks in foreign visitors' top 3 most-impactful China experiences. The "100,000–300,000" victims section is sobering. It's a essential alongside the Berlin Holocaust Memorial and Hiroshima Peace Memorial.

The 3-day Nanjing history plan

| Day | Focus | Sites | Cost (CNY) | |---|---|---|---| | 1 | Ming & Republic | Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum, Ming Xiaoling Tomb, Linggu Temple | 600 | | 2 | 20th century | Nanjing Massacre Memorial Hall (morning), Presidential Palace, Nanjing Museum | 500 | | 3 | Old Nanjing | Confucius Temple, City Wall (Zhonghua Gate section), Qinhuai river cruise (evening) | 700 |

Total: ~¥1,800 per person, 3 days, mid-range (excl. hotel).

Key sites — what to expect

Nanjing Massacre Memorial Hall (侵华日军南京大屠杀遇难同胞纪念馆)

Free entry. English audio guide ¥20. Open Tue–Sun 08:30–17:00 (closed Mondays). Allow 2.5 hours. Three main halls: the outdoor mass-grave excavation site, the documentary hall, and the "12 Seconds" exhibit (representing the killing rate at the height of the 6-week massacre). Behave with full solemnity — no photos in the inner halls, no loud talking, no laughing. The site is sacred ground to Chinese visitors.

Ming Xiaoling Tomb (明孝陵)

UNESCO World Heritage (2003). The tomb of the Hongwu Emperor (朱元璋, 1328–1398), founder of the Ming Dynasty. Entry ¥70. The 1,800 m "Spirit Way" lined with stone animals is one of China's most-photographed paths. Best in autumn (Nov–early Dec) when the ginkgo and metasequoia trees turn gold. Allow 2 hours.

Confucius Temple (夫子庙) & Qinhuai River (秦淮河)

The temple dates to 1034 AD; the current structure is mostly Qing-era restoration. The surrounding area is a pedestrian zone of teahouses, snacks, and gift shops. Best in the evening (lights on). A 40-minute Qinhuai river cruise is ¥80. Heavy on the tourist-trap vibe but still worth 1 evening.

Ming City Wall (明城墙)

Built 1366–1386. 33.4 km of original wall still standing — the longest city wall in the world. Best section to walk: Zhonghua Gate (中华门), 4 nested defensive gates (the only one of its kind in China), ¥50 entry, allow 1.5 hours. Alternatively, walk the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom-era segment near Xuanwu Lake (free).

Presidential Palace (总统府)

The seat of five governments in one complex: Ming garden, Qing governor's office, Taiping Heavenly Kingdom Heavenly King Palace (1853–1864), Sun Yat-sen's Republic of China presidency (1912–1949), and the early PRC Nanjing municipal government. Entry ¥35. Allow 2.5 hours. The 4D movie (¥30) is worthwhile.

Practical info

  • Airport: Nanjing Lukou (NKG) — metro Line S1 to South Station, 35 min, ¥7.
  • Train: Nanjing South and Nanjing Station both on the Beijing–Shanghai HSR line. Shanghai Hongqiao to Nanjing: 1.5h, 250+ daily, ¥140 second class.
  • Metro: 11 lines covering all major sites. ¥2–5 per ride. Alipay or WeChat Pay at the gate; no ticket needed.
  • Hotels: Stay near Xinjiekou (新街口) metro hub or Confucius Temple (夫子庙) for walkability. Mid-range: ¥350–600/night.
  • Best season: March–May, September–November. Summers (Jun–Aug) hit 35°C with 80% humidity — "Nanjing furnace city" is a real saying. Winters are damp but rarely below 0°C.

Verdict

Nanjing is the best Chinese history city after Beijing and Xi'an, and arguably more approachable than Xi'an for English-only travelers. 2–3 days is the right dose. Combine with Shanghai for a classic 2-city trip, or with Yangzhou for a quieter slow-travel history week.
