Visit Xiamen & Gulangyu in 2026

Visit Xiamen & Gulangyu in 2026

TL;DRYes, if you want a Chinese coastal city that doesn't feel like a megacity. Xiamen (厦门) is a relaxed port of 5 million on the Taiwan Strait, with UNESCO-listed Gulangyu Island (鼓浪屿) a 7-minute ferry away. Three signature experiences: the Gulangyu piano museums and colonial architecture, the Hulishan Fortress (胡里山炮台), and Shapowei (沙坡尾), the old fishing harbour turned hipster district. 2–3 days is enough. Weather is mild year-round (15–32°C); typhoon risk in July–September is the only serious downside. Cost: ¥600–1,000/day mid-range.

5 decision questions

Q1. Are you a beach or city traveler?

  • Beach → Xiamen is not a beach city. The closest decent beach is Baicheng Beach (白城海滩) near Xiamen University, 1 km of grey sand, free entry. The nearby Island Loop Road (环岛路) is great for cycling. For real beach, you need 3 hours south: Dongshan Island (东山岛).
  • City + culture → This is Xiamen's strength. The Gulangyu UNESCO area, Xiamen University (one of China's most beautiful campuses), South Putuo Temple (南普陀寺), Hulishan Fortress, and the 8th seafood market for the night food scene.
  • Both → 3 days: 1 Gulangyu, 1 city + Hulishan, 1 beach or Dongshan side trip.

Q2. Are you traveling with kids?

  • Yes → Xiamen is excellent for kids. The aquarium (¥90), the Wushipu Beach (五色土), and the Xiamen Science and Technology Museum (科技馆, free) are family-tested. Gulangyu has no cars — safe for letting kids run.
  • No → Same plan.
  • Hardy teens → Add the Wuyuan Bay Beach (五缘湾) for kitesurfing lessons (¥300, 2 hours).

Q3. Is English your only language?

  • Yes → Xiamen has full English support. Metro signs in English, most taxi drivers use GPS, restaurants have English menus near the tourist zones.
  • Mandarin → Better. The Jimei School Village (集美学村), Tan Kah Kee's 1910s university complex, is poorly translated but historically significant.
  • Limited Chinese → Buy a Xiamen Metro Tourist Pass (¥30/day) — works on metro, buses, and the Gulangyu ferry. Tap with Alipay or WeChat.

Q4. Is this part of a Fujian or broader tour?

  • Fujian tour → Xiamen fits naturally with Fuzhou (福州), Quanzhou (泉州), and the Tulou (土楼) earthen roundhouses in Yongding (永定). UNESCO-listed Tulou are 3 hours from Xiamen.
  • Broader tour → Xiamen is 1.5 hours by HSR from Shenzhen and 4 hours by HSR from Shanghai. Easy to add.
  • Stand-alone → Works. Xiamen Gaoqi Airport (XMN) has 60+ direct international flights.

Q5. Do you have a typhoon-season concern?

  • July–September → Real risk. Xiamen averages 2–3 typhoon landfalls/season, mostly August. Ferry to Gulangyu stops; outdoor sightseeing is shut for 1–2 days. Buy travel insurance that covers typhoon disruption.
  • October–June → No typhoon risk. Best months: October–December (mild, dry, 18–25°C) and March–May (warm, 20–28°C, low rain).

6 weighted criteria

  • Time fit (25) — 2 days for the core (Gulangyu + South Putuo + Hulishan), 3 days with Shapowei and the Island Loop, 4 days with a Tulou day trip.
  • Cost fit (20) — Mid-range ¥600–1,000/day. Hotels are 40–50% cheaper than Shanghai at the same rating. Gulangyu's heritage hotels run ¥400–800/night.
  • Crowd fit (18) — Heavy on weekends and Chinese summer holidays. Weekdays are calm. Gulangyu caps visitors at 50,000/day; book ferry tickets 1–3 days ahead on the "Xiamen Ferry" (厦门轮渡) WeChat mini-program.
  • Weather fit (15) — Mild year-round. Avoid August (typhoons + 35°C heat). Winters are cool but never freezing (10–18°C).
  • Family fit (12) — Stroller-friendly, no cars on Gulangyu, English-friendly. Top family city in Fujian.
  • Memorability (10) — Gulangyu's piano alleys, the sunset from Sunlight Rock (日光岩, ¥60), and the Shapowei creative district are memorable, though less famous than Beijing/Xi'an landmarks.

The 3-day Xiamen + Gulangyu plan

| Day | Focus | Sites | Cost (CNY) | |---|---|---|---| | 1 | Gulangyu Island | Ferry from Lundu Pier, Shuzhuang Garden, Piano Museum, Sunlight Rock, sunset on the Island Loop | 700 | | 2 | Old Xiamen | South Putuo Temple, Xiamen University, Hulishan Fortress, Shapowei creative district | 600 | | 3 | Coastal Xiamen | Island Loop cycling, Baicheng Beach, Jimei School Village, Zhongshan Road pedestrian street | 500 |

Total: ~¥1,800 per person, 3 days, mid-range (excl. hotel).

Key sites

Gulangyu Island (鼓浪屿)

UNESCO World Heritage (2017) as a "Historic International Settlement." 1.88 km², no cars, ~20,000 residents. The piano museum (¥30) holds 200+ pianos; the island has China's only Piano Museum because the colonial foreign community imported them in the 1900s. Shuzhuang Garden (菽庄花园, ¥30) is the signature garden, blending Fujian and Western styles. Sunlight Rock (日光岩, ¥60) is the highest point on the island, 360° views. Allow 6–8 hours for a thorough visit. Ferry is ¥35 round trip, 7 min, departs from Lundu Pier (轮渡码头) every 15 min.

South Putuo Temple (南普陀寺)

Free entry. A 1,000-year-old Buddhist temple on the slope of Wulao Peak, opposite Xiamen University. Allow 1.5 hours. Combine with a walk around the Xiamen University campus (free, ID/passport required at the gate).

Hulishan Fortress (胡里山炮台)

¥25 entry. A late-Qing coastal defense fortress with the 28 cm Krupp cannon from 1891 — one of the largest surviving coastal artillery pieces in the world. Allow 1.5 hours. The 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM firing demonstrations are the highlight.

Shapowei (沙坡尾)

A restored 1920s fishing harbour now home to creative shops, cafes, and art spaces. Best in late afternoon through evening. Free to walk; spending money depends on appetite. "Thank You" cafe (谢谢咖啡) and "Cat's Home" (猫的国) are the Instagram picks.

Fujian Tulou Day Trip

The Tulou (土楼) of Yongding and Nanjing counties are UNESCO-listed earthen roundhouses built by the Hakka people. The most famous is Chengqi Lou (承启楼), "the king of Tulou" — 4 rings, 400 rooms, occupied continuously since 1709. 3 hours by car from Xiamen, or book a day tour (¥300–500, includes lunch). Worth it if you have 1 extra day.

Practical info

  • Airport: Xiamen Gaoqi (XMN) — metro Line 1 to downtown, 30 min, ¥4.
  • Train: Xiamen North Station on the Fuzhou–Xiamen HSR. Fuzhou: 1.5h, ¥85. Shenzhen: 3.5h, ¥230. Shanghai: 5.5h, ¥430.
  • Ferry: The Lundu Pier (轮渡码头) is the main Gulangyu ferry. Buy tickets on-site or via the "Xiamen Ferry" WeChat mini-program. Real-name required — bring your passport.
  • Hotels: Stay on Zhongshan Road (中山路) pedestrian street or near Xiamen University for walkability. Gulangyu hotels (¥400–800) are atmospheric but require a 7-min ferry commute.
  • Food: Try shao xian zao (沙茶面), Xiamen's signature peanut-coconut curry noodle soup. Oyster omelette (海蛎煎), fish ball soup (鱼丸汤), and peanut soup (花生汤). The 8th Seafood Market (第八海鲜市场) lets you pick live seafood and have it cooked nearby for ¥30–100 per dish.
  • Best season: October–December is the gold standard — 18–25°C, dry, low typhoon risk. April–May is second best. Avoid July–August.

Verdict

Xiamen is the best Chinese city for first-time visitors who want a coastal, mid-pace experience. Less famous than Beijing or Shanghai, but more relaxing. 2–3 days is the right dose. Combine with Fujian Tulou for a 4–5 day Fujian deep-dive, or with Wuyishan (武夷山) for a 7-day Fujian + tea + Danxia mountains tour.
