Summary

Is Dongfang worth a detour? Yes — if you have already done Sanya's beaches and want a quieter, cheaper, more local Hainan. This is Hainan Island's westernmost city (the name means "the East", but geography never got the memo); the government sits in Basuo town, facing the Beibu Gulf. Two to three days is right: one sunset for the Yulinzhou lighthouse headland, one day for the Exianling karst and the Daguangba dam, plus an optional day for Baicha village's Li boat-shaped houses — about 80 survive, and the building craft joined China's national intangible-heritage list in 2008 — and the Datian Eld's deer reserve. Getting in is easy: the round-island high-speed rail's western section opened in December 2015; from Sanya the fastest trains take about 26 minutes, most run 50-60 minutes, second class costs 30-60 CNY. Why Dongfang

First, the geography: Dongfang is a county-level city on Hainan's west coast, covering roughly 2,272 square kilometres with 444,458 permanent residents at the 2020 census. The land tilts from the port and wind-turbine shoreline in the west up into the mountains of the Changhua River headwaters in the east. It is one of the driest, sunniest corners of the island — around 2,600 hours of sunshine a year and almost no rain in winter — which is exactly why retirees from the Chinese mainland keep winter homes here.

The name misleads. "Dongfang" comes from an old Li-district toponym, unrelated to any direction; the county's former name Gan'en ("thankful for grace") survives in the Gan'en Plain and the Gan'en River. The county was created in 1952 and became a city in 1997. Basuo has shipped iron ore since the wartime years and remains one of Hainan's working industrial ports; the stone stele by the harbour, erected in 2020, marks the site of the last battle of the 1950 campaign that liberated Hainan.

Three things travelers actually care about all check out. It is cheap — equivalent rooms and meals run a third to a half of Sanya prices. It is uncrowded — no wall of tourists at Yulinzhou's sunset. And it connects: the Hainan round-island tourism highway, fully open since December 2023, stitches the west coast into one drive, running south to Tianya Haijiao and Sanya, north to Danzhou and Haikou. Yulinzhou: lighthouse, wind turbines and the island's westernmost sunset

Yulinzhou is a rocky headland southwest of Basuo, about 7 kilometres from downtown, generally regarded as the westernmost point of Hainan Island. A white lighthouse stands on the cliff, a row of wind turbines lines the shore, and reef flats emerge at low tide; the fine sand is mixed with gravel — this is not Sanya's carpet beach, which is precisely why it still feels wild. Entry is free, and light is best after 17:30, when the Beibu Gulf sunset drops straight into the sea horizon. Parking gets tight on holiday evenings; arrive early or take a taxi. The "Basuo Port — last battle of the Hainan campaign" stele sits on the shore just south of the headland and is worth the short detour.

Datian Eld's Deer Reserve: from 26 head to more than 1,000

The Hainan Eld's deer is a subspecies found nowhere else in China and a national first-class protected animal. By the 1970s poaching and habitat loss had cut the population to roughly 26 head, all hanging on around Datian. The reserve was established in May 1976, upgraded to national level in 1986, and covers about 1,314 hectares some 10-15 kilometres from Basuo; today the population has recovered to more than 1,000 head, counting animals translocated to Bangxi in Changjiang and elsewhere. Honest disclosure: this is a research-and-protection reserve, not a petting park. Independent visitors have the best odds on dry-season early mornings along the fenced roads; call ahead to confirm visiting arrangements. For the "only place in all of China" factor alone, this is Hainan's most underrated half-day.

Exianling and Daguangba: Hainan's own karst "little Guilin"

About an hour east of Basuo, the Changhua River — Hainan's second-longest at roughly 230 kilometres — cuts through a cluster of tropical karst peaks: Exianling. The reservoir's backwater cradles the peaks, bamboo rafts drift between them, and locals call it "little Guilin". Next door, the Daguangba dam — about 5.8 kilometres long — holds a long, flat reach of water and ranks among Hainan's landmark engineering works. There is no formal ticketing; access is free. Roads are narrow with frequent oncoming traffic, so drive yourself or hire a car. To pack this day more fully, the 5-day Dongfang itinerary adds a Jianfengling extension.

Baicha village: the Li boat-shaped houses are still alive

Baicha, in Jiangbian township, keeps the most complete ensemble of Li boat-shaped houses anywhere — about 80 of them: thatch roofs over rammed-earth walls, eaves pressed low, the whole row looking like boats overturned on a hillside. The building craft was inscribed on China's national intangible-heritage list in 2008, and the old village is preserved in full; residents have moved across the road to a new village, and a few elderly weavers still work Li brocade or brew Shanlan rice wine inside the old houses — a continuation of living memory, not a show. Keep voices down, enter no house uninvited, and don't shoot close-ups of faces. It is 1.5-2 hours by road from downtown on a winding mountain route; entry is free. Come around the Double-Third Festival (usually April in the Gregorian calendar) and you may catch traditional Li festivities.

Where to Stay

Stay in Basuo and don't move for two nights: the rail station, Yulinzhou, the Datian turn-off and the mountain road are all within a 20-minute drive. Mid-range chains run 150-300 CNY per night — a third to a half of comparable Sanya rates. Don't chase sea views: the west coast is a working port and a wind-farm shore, broad and open but no resort bay. From November to February long-stay winter visitors push occupancy up, so book a few days ahead; the rest of the year you can walk in.

Gastronomy

Two things are mandatory. First, Sigeng roast suckling pig: glass-crisp skin, sweet tender meat, sold by the cut with platters from a few dozen yuan — the dish locals serve at weddings, and people drive from across Hainan for it. Second, harbour seafood: the day's catch lands at Basuo fishing port and hits the town's open-air stalls by evening — steamed grouper, blanched shrimp at market prices, a solid feast for 60-120 CNY per person. Li flavors — bamboo-tube rice, Shanlan sticky-rice wine — show up in town restaurants and around Jiangbian. Mobile payment works everywhere; keep about 100 CNY in cash for the harbour stalls.

Getting there

The round-island high-speed rail is the workhorse. Its western section opened on 30 December 2015 and, joined with the 2010 eastern section, forms the world's first round-island HSR loop. Getting around

In town, taxis and DiDi cost little more than the flag fall. There is no usable public transport to Exianling or Baicha: charter a car for 400-600 CNY per day, share one for 100-150 CNY per person, or drive. Mountain roads are narrow and winding — watch for rockfall after rain, and download offline maps before heading east.

When to go

Ranked: first, the October-April dry season — clear, rainless, comfortable, and also the island's "snowbird" season; second, March-April, which can catch the Li Double-Third Festival; third, May-September — humid with the odd typhoon, for wind-turbine-and-cloud enthusiasts only. The roster line "spring and autumn are most pleasant" holds here too, but Dongfang's real differentiator is winter: in Hainan, Dongfang in winter beats Dongfang in summer.

Payment and connectivity

Alipay and WeChat Pay with linked international cards work everywhere; keep 100-200 CNY cash for the harbour and outlying Li villages. Tourist eSIMs hold a good signal in town, fade fast in the mountains, and effectively disappear at Baicha.

A 2-3 Day Plan

Two variants: with only one day, cut the mountains — harbour stele and town in the morning, all evening for Yulinzhou. Pacing notes: Yulinzhou is worth one visit — at dusk; Exianling suffers in high wind, when the rafts stop; do Baicha in the morning, when the light is flat-proof and the houses are coolest.

Beyond the Highlights

The west-coast wind is both resource and scenery: Dongfang's coastal wind farms line the round-island tourism highway, and at dusk the turbine silhouettes against the glittering sea are unavoidable photo material. Basuo's industrial landscape — ore stockpiles, bulk carriers, the long breakwater — is not an attraction in itself, but paired with the "last battle of the Hainan campaign" stele it is the best entry into this port town's story. One layer deeper lie the Gan'en Plain's rural market days, when each township takes its turn: ox carts, dried fish and mountain produce filling a street — more real than any ethnic-culture park.

Mid-range per person, 2026 (CNY/day): lodging 150-300; food 60-120; transport and charter 30-150 (cheaper split two ways); admission 0-50 — roughly 250-600 per day. On 150-250 you can still travel decently (chain hotel, open-air stalls, free sights). There is little luxury ceiling: Dongfang has no top-end resort, which is precisely why it is affordable.

Timing

One answer: November to February, when the mainland is coldest, days here run 20-26°C with almost no rain; if the snowbird crowds put you off, pick October or March-April. Summer is not impossible — just recalibrate expectations to wind farms and clouds.

Five decisions: two nights in Basuo, no hotel-hopping; the first evening belongs to Yulinzhou; charter a car for the Exianling day; do Baicha in the morning with a full tank; check the typhoon track before setting out — the west coast feels it first.
