For the Mogao Caves — 1,000 years of Buddhist murals and sculptures (UNESCO). For the Silk Road history — Dunhuang was the most important oasis on the China-to-Central-Asia route. For Zhangye Danxia — rainbow-colored sandstone mountains.
Getting there
Lanzhou Zhongchuan (LHW) is the main hub. Dunhuang (DNH) has flights from Beijing, Xi'an, and Lanzhou. HSR Lanzhou-Dunhuang: ~8 hours.

Flights or HSR within the province. Gansu is huge (1,800 km long) — overland travel between cities takes time.
