Pingyao is the only complete ancient walled city in China — walk the original Ming Dynasty walls, stay in a traditional courtyard inn, and see where China's first banks operated. Datong has two UNESCO sites within 30 km. The wooden pagoda at Yingxian is the world's tallest surviving wooden structure (67.5 m, built 1056).

Getting there & around
Getting there: Taiyuan (TYN) has flights from major Chinese cities and some international. Datong (DAT) has limited flights. From Beijing: HSR to Taiyuan 2.5h, to Datong 1.5h.
Getting around: HSR is the best way to move between Taiyuan, Pingyao, and Datong. For Hanging Temple and Hanging Monastery, hire a car or join a tour from Datong.
