Start at Shangdang Gate, the entrance of the old prefecture offices first raised in the Sui years (repeatedly rebuilt since the 580s). The city-god temple begun in 1285 and the 1580s Guanyin Hall, with some 500 hanging clay figures on its walls and beams, are short rides from the centre.

Huguan — Taihang Grand Canyon & Baquan Gorge

About 50 km southeast of town (a 1.5-hour drive), the roughly 225-square-km canyon area centres on Baquan Gorge, visited as a loop of boat, boardwalk, cableway and lift; leave a full day and buy the through ticket early.

Pingshun — Tongtian Gorge & departure

Tongtian Gorge runs about 26 km through Pingshun County, with a cableway and a glass viewing deck; the Taihang Shuixiang river villages make a calm stop on the way back, and Changzhi East puts Taiyuan about an hour away by rail.
