Writers' houses & the Southern Wall

Shen Congwen's house of 1866 — where the author of Border Town, written in 1934, was born — and the home of Xiong Xiling, premier in 1913; drive about 20 kilometres out to the Ming wall, begun in 1554, whose surviving sections total some 190 kilometres.

Caves & a Tang fortress

Qiliang Cave, about 5 kilometres north, runs galleries of some 6 kilometres past underground falls; Huangsiqiao's stone walls, first raised in 687 AD, guard a small garrison town about 25 kilometres southwest.
