Arrival and the Residence Area
Paifang village, 7 km north of downtown, free with ID. Born 1904, Deng left for France at 16 in 1920; the museum opened in 2004. Settle in slowly.

The Wider Residence Estate
Around the main house stand other listed buildings of the estate — the Hanlin Courtyard of the Deng clan and the village school where Deng studied before leaving in 1919. Both sit in the same Xiexing area, a short ride apart.

Foshou Hill and the City Square
A half-day on the wooded hill of the Foshou burial ground on the estate's fringe, then the riverside square with the 2004 centenary ding and its evening fountain.

Huaying Mountain Day
About 40 km east, under 1.5 hours by road; stone forest above 1,000 m, main peak 1,704 m. Cable car up, boardwalks on the ridge.

Tianyi Valley — Linshui Day
The gorge in Linshui County runs about 1.5 hours past the mountain. A wet trail of pools and falls needs 3-4 hours; grip-soled shoes.

West to Wusheng, Night by the Jialing
An hour west to Wusheng County. Yankou's Ming-Qing streets and old Hui quarter line the Jialing riverbank; sleep in the county town and eat river fish.

The Baozhen Fortress
Begun around 1910 and extended through the 1930s, the fortress joins a courtyard manor to gun towers in one walled compound, about 40 km from the county town. Return to Guang'an for the night.

Xiaoxi Old Town on the Qujiang
About 70 km north above the Qujiang, a market street that keeps its Qing layout; go by car or country bus, with river fish at lunch.

Chongqing Rail Day
A neighbor day, honestly labeled — Chongqing is a separate municipality about an hour by rail from Guang'an South. The stilt-house pile at Hongyadong and the river cableway fill a day; last train back.

Markets and Departure
A market breakfast of salted preserved eggs and Yuechi rice noodles, a slow river walk, then the train — about an hour to Chongqing, two to Chengdu.
