Paifang village, 7 km north of downtown; free with ID. Deng was born in 1904 and left for France at 16 in 1920; the collections museum opened in 2004. Keep the afternoon unhurried after travel.

Day 2

Huaying Mountain Day

About 40 km east, under 1.5 hours by road. Stone forest above 1,000 m, main peak 1,704 m; take the cable car up and walk the boardwalks. Cool air even in July.

Day 3

Tianyi Valley — Linshui Day

The canyon sits in Linshui County, the far side of Huaying Mountain — roughly 1.5 hours by road from Guang'an. A gorge trail of pools and waterfalls takes 3-4 hours; the path is wet and slippery, so shoes with grip matter.

Day 4

Wusheng — Yankou Town and the Fortress

Wusheng County is about an hour west. Yankou old town lines the Jialing with Ming-Qing streets and an old Hui quarter; the Baozhen fortress, begun in 1910 and extended through the 1930s, joins a walled manor to gun towers. Back to Guang'an for the night.

Siyuan Square, Markets and Departure

A slow last morning around the bronze ding and the riverside, then salted preserved eggs and Yuechi rice noodles before the train — about an hour to Chongqing, two to Chengdu.
